How You Can Help

As a non-government organisation and registered charity, Telethon Speech & Hearing relies heavily on its own fundraising to supplement the funding from various government bodies. At this stage, the Centre's vital early intervention services do not receive any recurrent government funding until a child reaches 4 years of age.

It costs the Centre over $15,000 per year to provide each hearing-impaired child in our program with support.

Each speech and language impaired child in our Talkabout Program costs $7,000 a year to educate.

We cannot provide these essential services to Western Australian children and their families without support. There are a number of ways you can help Telethon Speech & Hearing to give these children a voice.

Bequests

A bequest is a gift or legacy made through a Will. Gifts in wills, or bequests, are an important source of funds for Telethon Speech & Hearing and a worthwhile way for you to make a lasting contribution.

To help us continue to provide these invaluable services well into the future, we need to be nominated in Wills and Bequests.

If you decide to leave a bequest to us, it is advisable to inform us as this helps us to plan for the future, and discuss with you, should you wish, the application of your intended bequest.

If you would like more information on bequests or in memoriam giving, contact Christine Brancato on (+61 8) 9387 9804 or cbrancato@tsh.org.au.

Corporate Partnerships

Telethon Speech & Hearing values the support received from the corporate sector in Western Australia. Given limited government funding, we seek to build mutually beneficial partnerships with companies that share a vision in supporting services to hearing-impaired children.

There are many avenues for corporates to get involved with Telethon Speech & Hearing. One of the most significant is the "HEAR and SPEAK" sponsorship.

Our "HEAR and SPEAK" sponsorship program gives you the opportunity to help children who need our services from the time of first diagnosis.

Early intervention is the key to better outcomes for these children and their families and is more cost effective for the community than remedial programs

This "platinum sponsorship" supports a deaf child for 12 month's by providing $2,500 for audiology services, $8,000 for education services (Teachers of the Deaf) and $4,500 for therapy services (Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Psychologist).

Capital Campaign

Since September 2001, the Capital Campaign, with substantial support from Bill and Rhonda Wyllie, Telethon, Lotterywest and Variety WA has raised $3,720,000 which has seen the completion of:

BUILDING APPEAL – STAGE 1

    • A $1.2 million customized Early Intervention Centre incorporating state of the art acoustic design features, audiology clinics and therapy rooms was built in February 2002.
    • A $850,000 multi-sensory motor clinic with assessment suite, fine motor and sensory rooms and a 280sqm activity room was completed in January 2006.

Currently under construction:

BUILDING APPEAL – STAGE 2

  • A new Early Childhood Learning Centre consisting of classrooms to house our playgroups, kindergartens, pre-primaries and individual therapy sessions. It will also contain a library.

This new facility will significantly increase the Centre’s capacity to meet the special needs of children with hearing or speech and language impairments from 140 at present to almost 300 places. It will house our specialist paediatric early intervention team which gets young children ready for a successful transition to mainstream schooling.

Currently, our early intervention programs are housed in 30-year old dilapidated rooms originally intended for classes of 8 children and one adult.  Our increased intake has resulted in rooms being time-shared and, at times, some programs are run outdoors because of lack of room.

This project is currently costed at $1.92 million and funds have been sourced as follows:

  • $250,000         Non Government Centre Support – WA
  • $100,000         AISWA CGA (Commonwealth Government Schools funding)
  • $100,000         Existing capital resources
  • $50,000          The Stan Perron Charitable Trust
  • $20,000          Mr Frank Tomasi, Managing Director, Southern Cross Electrical Engineering
  • $200,000        Telethon Trust
  • $200,000         Wyllie Group
  • $500,000         Lotterywest
  • $250,000         Supplementary Commonwealth Government support
  • $250,000         Still to be raised

The proposed construction period is July 2008 – March 2009 with the opening of the facility scheduled for April 2009.
