Cochlear Kids
Cochlear implants provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing by doing the work of damaged parts of the inner ear to send sound signals to the brain. Thanks to the technology of cochlear implants, a new world of meaningful sound and communication has opened up for many profoundly deaf children and their families.
Cochlear Kids:
- identifies children who may benefit from a cochlear implant;
- provides audiological testing before and after implantation;
- assesses relevant aspects of child development (psychology, speech and language);
- ensures a smooth and speedy pathway from identification to post-surgical therapy, and
- enables all implant-related services to be easily accessible “under one roof”.
It is important that families understand what implants can do and to make sure every child who receives an implant uses it to their best advantage. Prior to implantation candidates undergo comprehensive and intensive audiological, listening and language evaluation, a process which establishes the appropriate type of hearing device for each individual patient.
The TSH team works closely with families to counsel and prepare them for the operation and post-operative rehabilitation with our multidisciplinary team of specialists.
