Enrolling in Talkabout


Eligibility
Children between the ages of 18 months and 6 years* who are experiencing a speech and language delay or disorder which may be due to:
- A history of middle ear problems (otitis media)
- Developmental Language Disorder
- Motor planning difficulties (childhood apraxia of speech)
*Please note: To join the program, children need to turn 2 years of age before June 30 in the year of entry into the program. Talkabout is not designed to manage the special needs of children with specific disabilities, such as an intellectual disability, permanent hearing loss, cerebral palsy, autism or other disabilities.
Referrals
Children may be referred by GP’s, Paediatricians, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, or other service providers.
Parents may also self-refer. Scholarships and bursaries are available upon application.

Does your child or student have difficulty with…
- Expressing their needs, wants and thoughts
- Following instructions
- Early literacy or literacy skills
- Social skills due to their language difficulties
- Word finding or limited vocabulary
- Sentence structure and syntax
- Telling a story in sequential order
Enrolment Process
1) Intake Interview
Not all children will be suited to the Talkabout learning environment. An intake interview with either our Playgroup Coordinator, Talkabout Deputy Principal or Principal is undertaken prior to enrolment to determine eligibility and appropriateness for the program.
Your medical specialist or therapist may refer you to the program, however it is not necessary to have a referral.
Enrolments can occur at any time throughout the year.

2) Entry
Child enters the Talkabout program.
3) Progress
- School Aged: The child’s progress is tracked with comprehensive portfolios, skills continuums, and regular assessments. Parent/teacher meetings are held twice per year, or as needed.
- In Playgroups: In Playgroups, the child’s progress is tracked with goal setting meetings with parents, caregivers, and end of year summary reports.
4) Mainstream School
Telethon Speech & Hearing teachers and specialists liaise with mainstream class teachers and specialists.
Fees and Charges
Enrolment Fee
An enrolment fee is payable if a place is offered for your child.
Please note these fees are non-refundable. Payments can be made via EFTPOS, BPAY, direct debit plan, credit card or cheque. Please pay at reception.
Tuition Fees
Fees are billed four times per year at the commencement of each term. A 5% discount will apply to Annual Fees if they are received in full by the end of the first term.

Family Concession
The following discounts apply to the tuition fees:
- First child Full fees
- Second child 5% discount off total tuition fees
- Third child 5% discount off total tuition fees
Financial Assistance
There are a limited number of bursaries available. Please contact the Family Liaison Officer or view the Bursary and Scholarships page of our website for an application form.
Insurance
Telethon Speech & Hearing have a Student Accident Insurance Policy covering all students for limited lump sum benefits. Parents are advised to have comprehensive private health insurance in addition.
Notice of Withdrawal
It is a condition of enrolment that notice of a student’s withdrawal is given in writing. One month notice is required to withdraw from the Talkabout 2 and 3 programs, and the Language Support program. A full term’s notice is required to withdraw from the Talkabout 4 and 5 programs (Talkabout 5 students may only exit the program at the end of term one or two).
In the event that such notice is not given, a full term’s fee may apply.
Payment Options
All fees are payable with 14 days of the account being rendered, unless satisfactory arrangements or progressive payments by direct debit are approved by the Accounts department.
Present the remittance slip with your cash, cheque, credit card or debit card payment to the office during office hours 8:30am to 4:30pm.
